Although the kids don't understand gifts, Santa, elves, etc... they still know how to tear into something that is wrapped so all in all, we had a GREAT Christmas. After holidays or trips, Clark and I talk about if we had a good time and things we may have done differently or not done at all. This year, it was the Christmas Eve nativity. We tried to stick towels on the kids' heads to be the three wise men and even got a small nativity scene out to go over the story and meaning of the season. It was a no go. For some reasons our kids freak when anything is on or around their heads. So we ended up making them all cry and they demolished my nicely, assembled nativity (don't worry, nothing was broken). Are most kids as destructive and dramatic as ours? Point is, we probably would've just eliminated all that stuff, read some passages from the scriptures, and called it good. So I guess if that's our biggest regret/lesson of the holiday, we did pretty good. :)
My sister made some delicious Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies while we were in Idaho so I whipped up seven dozen a few days before Christmas. Can of pumpkin +dry spice cake mix+chocolate chips=DONE! So easy that I think Leah even made a batch without my help. Seriously, if you know me, you know that I don't enjoy spending more than 30 minutes at a time in the kitchen so these cookies were perfect for me to make. I did enlist the boys to help and sent them into the pantry to get the chocolate chips. They didn't end up returning...
Zachary spent the majority of days searching for blankets and sucking his thumb.
Leah worked really hard to perfect her 'large-object-in-mouth-while-continuing-to-play' skill. She used to use more amateur objects like small blocks but has now moved up to bottles. It really is amazing what size and shape of object she can get in her mouth.
Caleb managed to do something a bit more productive than Leah. He was Dad's guinea pig for tower building...
...he worked on his baby raps while wearing Clark's hoodie...
...and most importantly, he kept our home decor on it's toes. He carted around Mr. Snowman and put him in a new place every day. Clark, at times, was startled walking around a corner thinking Mr. Snowman was one of our children. One time he actually said something to the snowman! :)
Christmas Eve was full of anticipation. Mostly by me because I knew the next day I didn't have to try and entertain the kids with toys they were bored with. We tried to snap a candid family shot before attempting our nativity. This was our best shot. We got the top of Zachary's head so we're counting it as a family photo.
During the movie, we worked on some Christmas tree ornaments for the kids. I know this is the sort of stuff we should do WITH the kids but we figured this year we'd leave them out and work in peace. Next year we'll all dive into the chaotic ornament making with glue, glitter, tape, etc... Should get crazy. For now, here's our creations...
Christmas Eve was relaxing and we all slept well. We got up and did our usual morning milk then started opening gifts. With the kids attention span and inability to open a gift in less than ten minutes, it took us all morning to empty the bottom of our tree. We even took a breakfast break. I'm glad we took our time though because the kids got to enjoy whatever we opened for 20 minutes or so before we moved on.
This will be our first pack of puzzles! We'll see how they do...
New quiet activity books for when we attend church. Each got their own because we've learned that equality is key with multiples...
The biggest surprise from Santa was their picnic table! Isn't this just the sweetest thing you've ever seen? Very calm, quiet, focused environment with Dad around...
Then Dad leaves and all the wild animals come out to play!
What? Pushing a truck in a pink stroller isn't cool?
Sorry Zachary, Santa isn't coming back. We even boarded up the fireplace to make sure of that (Really it's boarded so the kids don't climb in it. Definitely an eye sore in our family room).
No help needed from Dad here. Caleb had it all under control...
Vroooom! Zachary loved pushing around his truck...
After a fun/present-filled morning, the kids took their nap and so did we. Of course it was short lived because we had to be up and ready for church a couple hours later. We wanted to sit and have lunch with the kids (we never actually eat with the kids because they all sit in the triplet table, not at a table, and they eat dinner pretty early) but we ran out of time. I guess that would be my second bummer of the holidays. Wish we would've had some sort of family meal. There's always next year I guess.
Leah finally got to wear her Christmas dress she received for her birthday and it fit her perfectly! She was telling us how old she is...
Isn't her double chin awesome? She did have a matching headband on which girlified her, but that only lasted a few seconds. She's kneeling on the table and had actually been there quite a while. I thought she was playing but then I realized she couldn't navigate down in her dress.
After church we snapped a family photo, played with some toys, and put the kids down to bed.
I was really excited for them to finally go to sleep because our Christmas Day meal was waiting for us. We had prepped most of it a couple days earlier and our meat had been cooking all night. That's right....
Cafe Rio! If we can't go to Provo, we'll bring Provo to us! Let me just tell you, it was pretty much the most delicious thing I have ever tasted. Obviously our tortillas weren't nearly the same and I didn't attempt to make the tortilla strips, but everything else is definitely worth bragging about. Homemade sweet rice, sweet pork (oh so sweet), black beans, and fresh creamy tomatillo sauce. I hate to say it but this just might be a family Christmas tradition. Sorry turkey, just not as excited about you.
We went to bed full, happy, satisfied with life, and ready to start our countdown until next Christmas. :) Literally, Clark actually said, "I hate the day after Christmas because the countdown starts over." Gotta love his spirit.
So that's what we did! It wasn't all bliss and perfection but we had a memorable time nonetheless. We hope everyone's Christmas was also full of family, love, food, laughter, and reflection. Let's just hope that next year our three little wise men will be more cooperative.
